From the late eighteenth century onward, watchmakers established in eastern France began building a genuine industry around regulation, casing and finishing. What started as a handful of small family workshops gradually became an organised trade, capable of rivalling Europe's great watchmaking centres. France went on to develop its own technical schools, its own trade guilds, and above all its own standard of quality.

A quest for precision that became a signature

The reputation of French watchmaking was not built on aesthetics alone, but on rigour. Observatories dedicated to chronometry were established to certify the reliability of movements, setting strict standards that only the finest workshops could meet.
