Why Besançon is historically linked to watchmaking.
Besançon is regarded as the historic capital of French watchmaking because, from the late eighteenth century, it concentrated the bulk of the country's expertise, technical schools and workshops in the sector. Nestled in a loop of the Doubs river and close to the Swiss border, the town benefited from constant exchange with neighbouring watchmakers, allowing it to develop a genuine local technical culture. It was in this town, and nowhere else, that Maison MONTIGNAC chose to set up our workshop.
Besançon's proximity to the Swiss Jura arc, historically devoted to watchmaking, encouraged the flow of techniques, tools and craftsmen. This border position allowed the town to gradually specialise in precision regulation, casing and finishing — skills that demand time, patience and the right tooling.
Over the course of the nineteenth century, Besançon built its expertise around technical schools dedicated to watchmaking, training generations of skilled workers. Workshops multiplied across the town, each specialising in a precise stage of watchmaking, from movement to case. This complete industrial chain, rare for its time, earned the town a reputation reaching well beyond regional borders.
Besançon also housed a chronometric observatory tasked with certifying the reliability of watches produced locally. This culture of testing firmly established the idea that French watchmaking precision could rival the best international references. It is this exacting heritage that we find today in the design of our collections, whether the Origine collection, the Paladin collection or the Sentinel collection.
Even today, Besançon retains this watchmaking identity, caught between independent workshops and industrial memory. Choosing to assemble our watches here means carrying on the legacy of a place that has never stopped keeping this craft alive, rather than freezing it in the past.
