How to Care for Your Automatic Watch Every Day

How to Care for Your Automatic Watch Every Day

Caring for an automatic watch day to day comes down to a few simple habits: protecting it from shocks and magnetic fields, cleaning it regularly without excess water, avoiding letting it sit unworn for too long, and keeping an eye on the condition of the strap. In the vast majority of cases, these habits alone are enough to preserve an automatic watch for many years.

Cleaning without harming the movement

A simple soft, dry cloth is enough to remove dust from the case and strap after extended wear. For the crystal, a light pass with a microfibre cloth helps avoid micro-scratches. It is best never to submerge an automatic watch in water unless its water resistance is absolutely certain, and to avoid household products or solvents, which can damage the gaskets and the case finishing.

Being wary of shocks and magnetic exposure

Mechanical watches remain sensitive to hard impacts and strong magnetic fields, which are more common than one might think: speakers, magnetic bag clasps, certain phone stands. Repeated shocks or prolonged exposure can throw off the movement's accuracy. This is not an unusual fragility; it is simply the nature of a mechanism made up of dozens of components assembled with great care, such as those built in our Besançon workshop.

Not neglecting the strap

The strap deserves attention in its own right, especially when it is an interchangeable leather strap: it absorbs sweat and moisture, which can weaken it over time. Alternating between two straps lets each one breathe between wears, a simple habit that extends its lifespan.

Relying on the right tools

A few dedicated accessories make routine care easier: a microfibre cloth, a ventilated storage box, a soft brush for the case's tighter corners. Nothing elaborate is required, just consistency in the habit.

A well-cared-for watch shows it over time: a clear crystal, a case free of deep scratches, a supple strap. This is also why every MONTIGNAC piece comes with a two-year warranty, a safety net that complements good daily habits.
