PVD, gold plating and gilding are surface treatments that change the color and durability of a watch case without altering its base metal. PVD (physical vapor deposition) is today the most durable of these treatments, offering long-lasting tones ranging from matte black to rose gold, whereas classic gold plating remains thinner and more prone to wear.

PVD, a Vacuum Deposition Technology

The PVD process involves depositing a thin metallic layer onto the case through vacuum evaporation, which then condenses into an extremely dense, adherent film. This process makes it possible to achieve a wide range of tones, from deep black to gold, while offering scratch and wear resistance far superior to that of traditional plating. It is a demanding technical skill, requiring precise control of temperature and deposition time to guarantee a uniform color across the entire case.

Gold Plating, an Older Tradition

Gold plating relies on a different principle: a thin layer of gold is deposited by electrolysis onto the case metal, usually steel or brass. This technique, older than PVD, remains valued for its warm appearance and distinctive feel, but the layer applied is thinner and therefore more prone to wear over the years, particularly at points of frequent contact such as the bracelet's clasp.

How to Preserve These Finishes Over Time

Whichever treatment is chosen, a few simple precautions extend its lifespan: avoid prolonged contact with abrasive surfaces, remove the watch before intense physical activity, and clean it regularly with a soft, dry cloth.
