Quartz vs. Automatic Watches: What Are the Differences?

The essential difference between a quartz watch and an automatic watch lies in their power source: the former runs on a battery and a quartz oscillator, the latter draws its energy from the movements of the wrist via a mechanical rotor. This technical choice directly influences the precision, maintenance, and price of watches built around each type of movement.

Precision: a clear advantage for quartz

On precision alone, a quartz watch almost always outperforms an automatic one. The quartz oscillator vibrates at an extremely stable frequency, limiting drift to just a few seconds per month, particularly with Japanese quartz movements known for their reliability. An automatic watch, mechanical by nature, remains subject to slight variations linked to temperature, the watch's position, or the gradual wear of its components; a drift of a few seconds per day is entirely normal and reflects no defect whatsoever. For everyday use demanding strict precision, a quartz watch therefore offers a regularity that mechanical movements are not really designed to match, that simply is not their primary purpose.

Maintenance: two different approaches

A quartz watch requires minimal upkeep: an occasional battery change is generally enough to keep it running for years. An automatic watch, by contrast, needs more regular attention, with periodic servicing to check the lubrication and proper functioning of its internal gear train. This difference in maintenance is not a drawback in itself, rather a matter of philosophy: quartz favours simplicity of use, while automatic embraces more sustained upkeep in the name of an entirely mechanical movement. Price and positioning of the two movements

Historically, quartz movements are simpler and less costly to produce than automatic movements, which have a far greater number of components and require considerably longer assembly. It would, however, be reductive to view quartz as merely an entry-level option: it is a deliberate technical choice, perfectly suited to certain uses and preferences.

A question of philosophy as much as technique

Beyond the figures, choosing between quartz and automatic often comes down to personal sensibility. Some like knowing that an entirely mechanical movement beats on their wrist through their own gestures, with no battery or electronic component. Others prefer the quiet reliability of a quartz watch, which asks for almost no attention at all. Neither choice is objectively better: they simply answer different expectations of what a watch should be, day to day.
