Watch complications refer to any function of a watch beyond the simple display of hours and minutes. Among the most common are the chronograph, which measures elapsed time, the GMT, which displays a second time zone, the date function, which shows the day of the month, and the moon phase, which follows the lunar cycle on the dial.

GMT, Traveling Across Two Time Zones

The GMT function allows you to read local time and a second time zone simultaneously, thanks to an additional hand that completes one rotation of the dial every twenty-four hours instead of twelve. It is a particularly useful complication for frequent travelers or for those who stay in regular contact with someone living abroad. Contrary to popular belief, it does not require a complex movement: many automatic calibers incorporate this function reliably and legibly.

The Date Function, Everyday Convenience

The date function is undoubtedly the most widespread complication: a simple window or hand indicates the current day of the month. More elaborate variants exist, such as the complete calendar, which also displays the day of the week, or even the month. This discreet yet valuable function equips a large share of automatic watches, where the date typically advances in step with the movement of the barrel.

Moon Phase, the Poetry of the Sky on the Dial

The moon phase complication reproduces on a small disc, usually set in a sub-dial, the appearance of the moon as it appears in the sky, from new moon to full moon. Historically tied to agricultural needs and navigation, it has today retained a primarily aesthetic and poetic dimension, valued for its slow, hypnotic movement over the weeks. It is a complication that demands great precision in design, as its disc needs adjusting only once every two or three years, depending on the caliber.
