Watch Water Resistance: What Do ATM Ratings Mean?

Watch Water Resistance: What Do ATM Ratings Mean?

ATM (atmospheres) indicate a watch's level of water resistance, that is, its ability to withstand water pressure. A watch rated 3 ATM can withstand splashes and light rain, one rated 5 ATM can handle a shower or the occasional dishwashing session, while from 10 ATM upward it becomes suitable for swimming in a pool or the sea, though not for scuba diving.

What the ATM Number Really Means

One ATM corresponds roughly to the pressure exerted by ten meters of water column, but this figure should not be read as a permitted diving depth for everyday practical use. Water-resistance tests are carried out in a laboratory, under static conditions, whereas real-world use exposes the watch to movement, temperature variation and impacts that reduce the actual safety margin. This is why manufacturers always recommend staying cautious and not significantly exceeding the use corresponding to the stated rating.

Which Water-Resistance Rating for Which Use

For office and everyday wear, a water resistance of 3 to 5 ATM is more than enough to protect the watch from rain or hand-washing. For occasional swimming or light water sports, it is best to choose a model rated 10 ATM or higher. Scuba diving, on the other hand, requires watches specifically designed and certified for that purpose, with much higher ratings and dedicated components.

Maintaining Water Resistance Over Time

A watch's water resistance is never permanent: the internal gaskets age, compress and lose performance over the years, particularly after an impact or after the case has been opened. A periodic check, especially after several years of wear, makes it possible to verify that the gaskets are still doing their job. Our after-sales service is available for this type of check, as well as for any question about maintaining your watch.

If you are unsure which water-resistance rating suits your needs, do not hesitate to contact our customer service team, and review our shipping and returns policy before placing an order. Discover our watches and choose the one that will truly accompany your everyday life.
