An explanation of the openworked dial and its aesthetic and technical appeal.
An openworked dial watch, also called a skeleton watch, is a watch whose dial has been partially or fully cut away to reveal the gears of the movement at work. This openworking transforms the watch into a genuine mechanical showcase, letting you watch in real time the balance wheel, bridges and gears that ordinarily keep time discreetly out of sight.
Designing an openworked dial requires meticulous work, as every component of the movement intended to remain visible must be finished with particular care, when it would normally be hidden beneath a solid dial. The bridges are often beveled, polished or decorated, and the whole movement must maintain a visual balance while continuing to run with precision. This level of demand reflects the artisanal craftsmanship of our workshop, where technique and aesthetics always move forward hand in hand.
A skeleton dial appeals first because it reveals what you never see on a classic watch: the movement itself, with its rhythm and living mechanics. It is a way of displaying an interest in traditional watchmaking, while wearing a piece resolutely different from the usual solid dials. This deliberate transparency works especially well on automatic watches, since it is precisely the natural animation of the mechanical movement that gives the openworking its full meaning.
An openworked dial exposes the movement to dust and humidity more than a classic closed dial would, which calls for slightly greater everyday vigilance. It is advisable to avoid very dusty environments and to have the watch's water resistance checked more regularly. This extra attention is part of the appeal of this type of piece, one that asks a little more of its owner than a classic watch would.
